VISUAL ART
Since 1992, Hernandez has painted murals and exhibited his work in galleries, cultural institutions, and Universities. Over the years he’s worked primarily with acrylics, watercolor, charcoal, ink, and collage, and his art has graced book covers, t-shirts, and posters for concerts and cultural events. Hernandez has also worked with silkscreen, and continues to experiment with different mediums and techniques. In 1999, he was selected as the apprentice for Bay Area master muralist Juana Alicia, to work on a large scale fresco mural titled, “Santuario/ Sanctuary,” (pictured at the top left, below) which is permanently installed at Gate G in the San Francisco International Airport. The fresco technique used by Juan Alicia was passed on to her by her teachers, Stephen Dimitroff and Lucienne Bloch, who honed their technique under Mexican muralist, Diego Rivera. Hernandez has collaborated with many visual artists on larger projects as well, and has been commissioned for special projects by groups like Univision, Fresno State, and the American Friends Service Committee, for which he painted a portable mural for their Tamejavi Festival (pictured at the far bottom) in collaboration with artist, Ramiro Martinez. Hernandez frequently uses visual imagery in his live performances, as well as in his books.
